By Anthony Schmidt

The food industry is growing rapidly because many people are becoming foodies and love to experiment with different kinds of dishes that would come from their own imagination. Of course, this leads also to the growth of the catering industry which is also rapidly growing due to the fact that many people want to have their offices or events catered by professionals. If one is interested to enter the catering field, it is very important he go through food service training.

Just a little definition of terms, catering is not only limited to serving meals in events or parties. Catering services would also included tying up with an office or a school and provide a cafeteria for the institution that they are tying up with. Of course, most catering services are meant for events, parties and the like because with all the parties and big dos these days, professional high quality caterers are very much in demand.

Upon the beginning of training, one will first have to know the basics of taking and following orders because this is pretty much what catering is all about. As an intern, one will first be learning how to listen to the orders of different customers and how to respond. It is only through knowing how to serve will one then be able to take the lead and know how to prepare his own menu in the future.

While he is assisting his superiors, he will also learn the kinds of cuisines that exist around the world. One thing to remember is that employers usually get applicants who have some background or a degree in some form of culinary arts. There are quite a number of things to memorize which is why learning the theory part is quite important.

One will also be learning elements of style if he is a caterer for parties. Always remember that catering is not all about serving the best tasting food. It is usually about providing the best experience for the customer which also means presenting the meals in such a way that the entire presentation looks fabulous.

In the course of training, one will also be assisting the cook in making and serving the meals. This is very important to learn because one cannot become a cook if he first does not know how to assist. Once he knows the legwork, then he will be able to grow in career.

Once one has already learned all of that, he may advance to becoming a cook. The cook not only cooks the food but also helps out in planning the menu of the company. Aside from that, the cook will also be in charge of the new entrants that are to help him with work.

Basically, these are some of the things to know about if one would enter the catering industry. With this industry being a really big one these days, it is a field to enter into. For one to enter the field, one must start from the bottom and go higher.
