ADHD In Children Can Be Managed Successfully

By Gary Young

In the past, youngsters that struggled to learn was simply seen as dumb and those that displayed unruly behaviour were simply described as naughty. Such kids were often punished and many were shunned by teachers and peers alike. Very often, the parents of such children did not know what to do. Today, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a recognized medical condition. ADHD in children from Dallas to Singapore can be treated and sufferers can lead normal lives.

ADD, as this condition is commonly known manifest in a wide variety of symptoms. Sufferers commonly struggle to concentrate and subsequently they struggle to learn. Many kids with ADD exhibit destructive behaviour, they can be moody and they often talk a mile a minute. Many patients often become withdrawn and refuse to participate in group or family activities. In extreme cases kids may sometimes become violent.

Parents often think that the treatment of ADD simply involves the prescription of a drug such as the well known Ritalin. They think that the drug will control the condition and that the symptoms will disappear. This is unfortunately not the case. Drugs do help to control some of the symptoms of ADD but by no means all of them. Then there is also the fact that many youngsters suffer from severe side effects.

ADD is best managed and treated with a holistic management plan. One important component of such a plan is regular exercise. Experts advise that kids with ADD should exercise at least thirty minutes per day, preferably in the outdoors. Exercise releases serotonin and dopamine in the brain which help improve the concentration of the child. Exercise also contributes towards the development of positive attitude.

Another important component of any treatment plan for kids with ADD is to ensure that they enjoy at least eight hours of quality sleep each day. Many patients struggle to fall asleep and this just aggravates the symptoms. Parents are advised to make sure that their children go to bed and wake up in the mornings at set times. Their rooms need to be dark and there must be no distractions of any kind.

A balanced diet plays a vital role in the successful management of ADD. It is common for ADD patients to avoid food for long periods only to then binge on anything they can lay their hands on. Instead, parents should make sure that their kids eat several smaller meals each day. Each meal should include some protein. Fresh vegetables and fruit, as well as fish such as sardines and tuna are all highly recommended.

Many kids benefit greatly from some form of psychological treatment. An experienced therapist can help them to manage their symptoms, to control their behaviour and to understand the condition that they suffer from. Practising yoga or meditation has also proved to be extremely beneficial. It helps the child to relax, to focus and to concentrate.

ADD does not need to be a life sentence. With a proper, balanced treatment plan kids with this condition can lead fulfilling lives and there is no reason why they cannot achieve their goals. It is very important to watch out for the symptoms and to seek professional help as soon as possible.
